Mission Statement

The International Institute for Subjective Experience and Research (ISER) - Arts and Health is active in the areas of health promotion and art, perceptual and sensory research and aesthetics as well as organizational development. It focuses on the development and establishment of artistic research and with that on alternative epistemological approaches. Its work ranges from discursive, academic to aesthetic, sensory epistemological approaches, which stem from a variety of academic disciplines.
In accordance with its interdisciplinary nature, the institutes' staff come from a range of professional backgrounds, such as cultural science, medicine, pedagogy and sociology.

The 'health promotion' model and the global development aims that come with it, like fighting poverty, sustaining peace and environmental protection are based on concepts of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the UNs' Millennium Development Goals (MDGs'). They have been put in concrete terms by different models such as the Meikirch model. Their aim is to promote individual capabilities, which are connected to social, cultural, political and economic factors. Aesthetic and artistic behavious is not only an individual but also a social strength in this context. However its potential remains widely uninvestigated and little integrated into the above mentioned fields of research. This refers to the creation of health promoting environments as well as furthering personal skills like the ability to communicate and make decisions empathetically, problem solving or the reconciliatory discourse in tense social situations.

The central idea of the Institute for Subjective Experience and Research (ISER) – Arts and Healths' work is the conviction that aesthetics and art are substantial elements of a social coexistence, which promote the health of individuals, support creative and innovative processes in society and help to solve social conflicts. The focal point of the insitute's research practice are human beings, their potential and the ever changing factors influencing their perception and actions in social interactions. For this reason the institute's research practice places its focus on subjective experiences, which complement objective epistemological approaches.

The institute conceives and realizes research projects, develops and realizes curricula and modules for the promotion of health in organizations and businesses. Furthermore the institute supports the development and establishment of degree programs for the promotion of health at universities. The institute's research practice is application-oriented and is backed up by a network of partners from the fields of medicine, education, social work and economy.

The institute is supported by a circle of associates from NGOs, such as the S.E.R. Foundation (Foundation for Subjective Experience and Research), which attained Consultancy Status as an NGO at the United Nations (ECOSOC) in 2003 and Special Consultancy Status in 2008 as well as being associated with the UN Department of Public Information. Universities such as the Medical School Hamburg or the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee (Switzerland) are also cooperation partners of the institute.
